Bombas BeeBetter Hub
Bombas turned a simple social promise into a defining brand identity: donating one item to someone facing homelessness for every item purchased, surpassing 150 million donations.
However, the BeeBetter Hub, the public-facing engine of this mission, had failed to keep pace. Operating on an inherited, undocumented codebase with an outdated search directory, the platform lacked the technical flexibility to support an upcoming brand refresh.
To bridge this gap, we designed a multi-phased strategy balancing immediate operational stability with long-term architecture, transforming their giving infrastructure into a scalable digital asset.
Discovery through strategic stabilization
Rather than proposing an immediate rebuild that would freeze critical marketing updates, we adopted an iterative, hands-on optimization approach to stabilize the existing infrastructure.
Taking rapid ownership of the legacy system allowed us to secure early operational wins, deploying critical media updates within our first week of engagement. This immediate execution established trust and maintained marketing momentum while allowing our team to analyze the system from the inside out.
This active diagnostic phase revealed deep-seated liabilities, such as core impact metrics being hardcoded into the source code as static assets. By addressing these immediate pain points, we protected the brand’s day-to-day presence while gathering the exact technical intelligence needed to map out a comprehensive architectural evolution.
Scaling data utility and user engagement
The centerpiece of the modernization was the complete overhaul of the Giving Directory, transitioning it from a limited location tool into an interactive, multi-dimensional search platform showcasing more than 4,000 giving partners.
We proposed a compelling business case for a clean, CMS-driven rebuild, proving that a modernized architecture was the only viable pathway to grant the internal team absolute independence to update copy, images and links instantly without a developer.
A robust filtering matrix was engineered to support the entire dataset, enabling visitors to filter by focus areas, location and the kind of support a partner offers or needs. To ensure operational efficiency, the frontend was designed to pull data dynamically from Airtable, which the Bombas team already maintained.
Optimizing mobile-first user experience
Elevating mobile-first responsiveness and intentional brand motion to drive engagement.
With eighty percent of traffic arriving on mobile, we engineered the frontend framework mobile-first, carrying this layout directly onto desktop screens rather than compressing desktop elements downward. This UX strategy ensures that crucial interactive elements — including search interfaces, filters and primary partner results — remain positioned above the fold across all screen sizes to maximize user engagement.
To support the upcoming visual identity change, we built a modular component architecture capable of absorbing the new brand design seamlessly without code changes at handover. We also integrated purposeful animation into the user journey; the Impact Report’s map animation plays once on load as a contextual introduction, before settling smoothly into place to orient the visitor, delivering this complete ecosystem in eighteen weeks.
Impact
The modernized BeeBetter Hub shipped to production in eighteen weeks, delivering an enterprise-grade platform that fully aligns technical capability with corporate purpose.
By replacing restrictive technical debt with an agile, CMS-backed architecture, the internal team gained full operational autonomy over their digital narrative. The revamped infrastructure successfully handles complex data queries across thousands of global giving partners, maintaining flawless performance while removing developer dependencies.
What began as an urgent stabilization project has matured into a sustained strategic partnership. By unlocking self-sufficiency and platform stability, we provided the foundation for the brand to showcase its verified societal impact with the sophistication its scale demands.
